This years Green River trip was full of firsts. It was the first Utah Fly Fishing Club Member Outing, the first time my little bro was going to see where he was going to be living for the summer. As well as a first float for Sarah and throw in a couple new waters and we had an adventure in the making.

The trip started off early Friday morning, as Mallary and I made our way the over the Mtns, throught the desert and back up to the Green River. As we reached the summit of our journey we were greeted with a heavy snow storm that slowed our pace to walking speeds. After what seemed like days, we reached the Flaming Gorge Lodge. We met Jordan and Sarah found out where their new home would be on guide row and helped them quickly un pack, so we could get on the river. We finally loaded the boat at about 1 pm in hopes of hitting the BWOs just right. Things didn’t go exactly as planned with the BWOs, but the nice thing about the green is that if one thing isn’t working, something else usally does. We found success site fishing for big bows as well as midge eating browns. The float was a huge success as everyone in the group caught multipal fish as well as Sarahs first fish on the green. One of the highlights of the float had to be the late day streamer action that we had in the lower sections of the A section. Black buggers were the go to fly and the fish were chasing them almost every cast. The day was topped off with a warm home cooked meal at the Lodge and then back to the trailer to recount the days experiences as well as refill our fly boxes. The next morning we awoke to blue skys and a crisp morning breeze. With a tip from a neibor we decided to try an out of the way desination that is said to have some nice fish. This little creek didn’t disappoint and was a great place to spend a morning. The rest of the day was set up to float the green again. The difference was this time we knew what to use and where to focas on. With the snow and wind giving us a break we had an awesome float. (You know those days you dream about) The highlight for me was that for the first time I was able to fish from my drift boat while floating the green. It was great change, even though I really do enjoy rowing. As sun began to set I knew our time on this speacial river was about over, but the memories gained by all will hold us through until our next visit. Even thought I am not on a river, it is alway with me.

The Green River member outing was a huge success in both a good time and great fishing. In all we had 11 members of UFFC join us as well as a few that converted to the maddness while on the river. The weather wasn’t exactly perfect and I can’t recall if the sun ever came out, but those that came couldn’t care less about getting a tan. The wet overcast weekend was something we hoped for and it didn’t let us down. In all it was a great weekend filled with many memories and adventures shared by all that participated. So those of you that came thank you for the experiences and many life lesson learned. For those that couldn’t make it, we hope that you can join us on our next member outing.

Here our a few pictures that I hope will help tell the story of the Green River UFFC member outing.

I get ask to go fishing with others almost on a daily basis, but this time it was different. Griff was turning 13 and all he wanted to do for his b-day was to go fishing with me, his dad Jeff, best friend Preston and best friends dad Todd. The plan was set for a 2 day float trip down the coveted Green River in NE Utah. This was going to be a trip of firsts for our group. It would be the first time Griff and his dad experience the Green as well, as Preston and his dads first time fly fishing. I couldn’t think of a better way to spend a b-day as well as a first time fly fishing then on the Green with your boys. I knew this trip was going to be special. The trip started out with a forecast of 1-3 inches snow, but as we got to the summit and ready to drop down to the lodge there was already 3 inches of snow and it didn’t seem to be letting up. The Green River Canyon was a surreal experience to see the high red cliff walls covered in a blanket of snow. I couldn’t help hoping that the snow would stick around a give us some amazing scenery and most importantly epic fishing. I must have done something right, because the snow never quit the whole time we were there. Being 1 of only 3 boats on the water we took our sweet time enjoying the best runs and holes. Todd started the trip off catching a nice brown on his 2nd cast ever on a fly rod. (Beginners luck to the max)

After a great start we had a nice consistent day of catching and missed hook-ups. One of the high lights of the trip was Dave’s monster bow he caught after fishing for it for over 30 mins. It was amazing to see him focus on this larger fish, until it finally fell to a #22 midge. Hooking it was only haft the battle. This fish fought hard! It tarpon leaped at least 5 times giving him a truly trophy of a fish. It was his largest trout ever and by the shaking of his hands, it won’t be one he forgets.

As we moved down river we started noticing heads poping all over the edges of the river and in slow back eddies. I’d been so excited about our large bows (Jeffs and Prestons hogs-too bad Preston) that I hadn’t even noticed the heavy midge hatch that was all around us. There were hundreds of rise forms all over the river. It was a site to see and frustrating at the same time, as the fish had so much food that it was hard to get our offering noticed. Since we only had gone 2 miles and it was already 4:45pm we packed up and speed fished the remainder 5 miles before it got dark. The speed fishing was great with over-sized streamers and deep nymphs.

As we reached little hole the wind picked up while the temps dropped. We were frozen and couldn’t wait for a nice warm meal at the lodge. If you haven’t eaten at the the Flaming Gorge Lodge you need to. It is all part of the culture of the area, plus the food is tasty and there is plenty of it. The next morning we were graced with 50 mph winds and at least 12 inches of fresh snow. I wished I was on a snowboarding trip, but it was April and it was supposed to be nice fly fishing weather, but thats spring in Utah.

At breakfast we weighed our odds, but when Plan A fails its time to go to Plan B. This was to drive right at the storm and hopefully past it by the time we reached the Middle Provo. Our plan worked and the fishing didn’t disappoint. We had semi blue sky’s with a little wind and 45 degree temps. Just perfect for another late spring midge hatch.

In all the whole trip was an adventure and hopefully one that will be embedded in the hearts of the two newbies and a father and son enjoying a special day together. But for me the odd man out, I had a trip of a life time. I had the opportunity to watch first hand as father and sons, friends and family enjoy time spent together. Because in life this is the way I imagened God meant it to be.

PS. Jeff, I still have your PONCHO in my truck…I’ll make sure you get that for our next trip

I go fishing a lot. Most of the time I fish I’m solo. Its usually easier and it gives me a chance to practice my own skills instead helping develop others all the time. And just maybe my long hours in the coldest crappiest conditions don’t excite too many people either. There are times when I am the luckiest man in the world and my beautiful wife joins me for a day on the river. (That gives me an idea about my next blog rant, Fishing with Girls, Wives, etc…) In this particular case Liz and I made a deal. If I worked out and ate healthy with her all week, she would come fishing with me on Sat. I didn’t even second guess myself. That Monday I was already planning on hitting the Green or the Berry if the ice was still around for the weekend. As the weekend grew near the Green was looking hard to beat. So on Sat morning we packed up the Jeep and headed northeast in search of hopefully some BWOs, Midges and most importantly some good quality time together. There is something special about going on trips with Liz, the lunches are always 100 times better, plus she makes the experience fun and alive. (She is that kind of person) As we got to the river around 10am I was shocked to see a half full parking lot, I guess the economy is even affecting some peoples time on the water. Today’s fishing trip was going to be a simple easy going outing, but as we started our float I notice a couple fish rising across the stream. Better go see what going on I though, as I finally got over to the opposite side of the river I notice fish scattering everywhere. I said in an excited voice “Liz check out how many fish there are in this run” I think she was shocked to see so many fish in such a small area.

After anchoring the boat my first couple casts produced hit and misses on a dry-dropper rig. After a little thought, I decided to go with what I knew wouldn’t spoke them, but would for sure produce some fish, at least I hoped. And that it did!!! It was the right set up for the right time of the year, for the right spooky fish. In fact I caught fish after fish, Liz joined in and reeled in a nice bow too. It was red hot fishing for bright colored wild Rainbows.

After a dozen or so 16-18 inchers I decided to target some of the larger fish I could see. The first was a very dark shadow about 20 ft in front of the boat. On my first cast to it, I noticed it followed my flies and when it turned back upstream they were gone. Set the hook I thought. I lifted what felt like a 30 pound anchor and the fight was on! This fish was wise and freakin fast, the old dark bow fought until he had had enough and gave us one good pass to bring him to the net. WOW, Its size grew 5 inches when he was in the net. It was the darkest steelhead like rainbow I had ever scene caught on the green. We nick named it the freak.

With one big fish to net I was back glassing the water for another. After a couple smaller fish, I spotted what I though was a sunken log in front of a big rock, until it moved after a something and returned in its feeding lane 50+ ft from us. My first cast was too short, but my second cast was right on the money. My line went tight and the water tossed like killer whale in the shallows. I had a huge fish on and I knew it. Luckily it went in front of the rock on a 100 ft run downstream and not behind. After letting up on the pressure the big beast turned and came straight back up stream and right pass the boat giving me a look and doubling the stress on another nail biting run. With only 6X on I didn’t want to do anything stupid, so I took my time and wore the beast down until I finally got him to the surface. Liz reached out with the long net, but the beast wasn’t done. 5 other attempts and I couldn’t pull him up to the surface so Liz could net him. Finally I pulled a little harder and SNAP. Just kidding!!! Its a happy story. Finally I pulled a little harder and Liz got the net underneath him and in the boat. I was speechless…It was the largest wild rainbow I had ever caught on the green and prefect in every way. It was a magical time to share such an amazing experience with my wife and one we won’t both live down for a long time.

The rest of the float was was as I had planned, simple, easy going with a fish or two in each area I decided to get out and fish. I was hoping for a good hatch, but with the constant breeze and bright sun it just didn’t happen, until the sun went down and we were just about off the river. Oh well, next time I’ll stay out past dark and just kill them, but this time it wasn’t about the fishing it was about spending time with my real true love, Liz.

Which it does if you wait too long. Its not so much that you forget, but it is the little things that get forgotten. In my rush I neglected to get some of the best pics of the trip from my friend Wayne. So here is another look at the trip from Wayne’s prospective.

Its the one trip each year that I am so excited about that I am thinking and planning for it all year. In a way its an adults Christmas. The first trip I took was a little crazy. We caught more fish than I have ever seen caught in one day on bwo’s and ended up with $1000s of dollars in tickets and fines. (Stupid Obstructing Justice Rule) Another memorable trip was the first trip with my boat. We we floated 3 days with great weather and the rivers resident big browns would not leave our PMX’s alone. But just as time changes all things, this years trip ranks up top as my new favorite bwo trip. The trip started well before the scheduled date of April 17-19th. During that time flies were tied, the boat was refinished and customized, needed gear was bought, and people that swore they were going to be there dropped like flies. We started the trip with only 4 of the original 15 group members. (Weather, wives, dogs, girl friends, money, jobs, and everything else seemed to be an excuse. I guess its all Obama’s fault) So with Gunner, Mallary, Wayne and myself, we set off for the Green and in search of a rising fish.

Day 1 (Friday 17th)
After a snowy drive we reached the red rocks of the Flaming Gorge Valley. Its always a warming feeling when one descends down the windy path and reaches the clear cool water of the green. The days fishing was red hot from the start. Mallary caught one of the two fish caught with a nymph rig the whole trip as we launched the boat. After that I noticed midges everywhere, so we hit up a couple of my favorite scum lines and had a blast, as we fished little midges for rising trout. The fishing turned up another level as we zeroed in to what they were really wanting and how they were wanting it. The fly of choice was a customized Orange Asher that I created on a wim. (I am sure glad I did) The scum suckers wouldn’t leave this fly alone. It caught fish all day for us. By the end of the day and after a trip to “The Wall” we were about 50 flies short and 25 of those were ashers.
Highlights:
Waynes and Mallarys huge browns at “The Wall”
“Spread Eagle, I mean bald eagle” good one Mal (What was that eagle?)
Frozen Hands, Feet
Last ones off the water, floating the last mile in the dark
Staying in a warm condo and not camping
Tying flies watching AEG-New ZDay 2

With a better idea of the fishing and the bugs. We started the day with a better idea of what we wanted to do. We started off with dries and never looked back. Midges and BWOs were the flies of choice. We only fished areas that held rising fish, which wasn’t very hard to find. With ideal weather the fishing was off the charts. It rained for about 30 mins as we had lunch and then after that the fishing was even better than before. In places the midges were so thick that it loked like their was sand on top of the water. On the way down “The Wall” produced right before dark with bwo’s. If Mallary didn’t fall in and get all wet, I would have been able to catch even more than 3 fish in 5 mins that she gave us. It was an amazing site to see hundreds of rising fish in the shallow water run. That night we met up with the rest of the crew Jeff, Laura and Addie. (The Family) They had a nice warm dinner ready as we got off the river and back to the condo.

Bright skies, warm weather and rising trout is a good way to sum up our last day on the river. We fished our favorite spot from the last couple days and it produced like we knew it would. The fish were a little picky, but a size down or 5 was all one needed to temp them to take our little midges. As the afternoon fell upon us, I noticed bigger fish were rising in a fast water seem. I studied the water and noticed the trout were only talking the emerging bwos. With this in mind I hooked and quick released the largest fish of the trip. Guessing it would have pushed 25, but who knows. I was able to pick up a very nice 22 to end the trip and fill my pot for another year. We rowed down the rest of the river fulfilled. As we reached little hole we were greeted with another prepared lunch and a chance to share our days stories, before we had to call it quits. In all it was some of the finest dry fly fishing I have experienced, as well as great company and experiences that will teach us for a life time.

Highlights
Osprey catching fish
Warm Weather!!! not for fishing
Addie first float
22 inch brown on 28 midge

The only issue standing in our way was the chance that the weather would be terrible. There was a cold, cold front moving in for the weekend, but to our luck, it held out and allow us to fish the beautiful calm before the storm. In fact I couldn’t believe it was November 1st. It was sunny and t-shirt weather pretty much all day. As for the fishing it was just as hot!!! We stopped at one of my favorite runs, so we could all hook up before we got too far down the river. This run produced fish after fish and never really let up.

Mal and I decided just two more casts at a big dark shadow that I thought was about a 20 inch Brown. My first cast was unsuccessful, but hooked a little Bow. Mal’s cast was right on target, hook set, big fish on! Instantly it took off for the safety of the faster deeper water. She fought it hard for what seemed like forever leaping out of the water twice, but just as wise Browns do. (This one I estimate around 22-23 inches) It took one last run that stole her flies and here heart. As she sat on the bank, sick to her stomach. I could help feel happy in a way that my little sister has become a top notch Fly Fisherwomen. (She has put the books aside and is now focused on learning and growing in this royal sport)

For the water being so cold and supposedly putting the fish in their winter mood. It sure was constant in our catch rate. We seemed to hookup on a reg basis on deep nymphs. (GBug and WD-40’s) My favorite part of this outing was our stop to fish tiny BWO’s to shallow rising trout.(Size 24) Mal and I each took turns casting at these feeding fish. I hooked up first with a nice 16′ Bow and then Mal fallowed shortly after with its twin. (She hooked it on the 4th take) I really have grown to love technical. To me it is the hardest and most frustrating fishing that I love the best. It’s fun to have all odds against you, but still come out on top ever once and a while. (It makes the success really worth it)

We reached the little hole at dark and was the last boat on the water, where we were greeted by Dad and Addie and a hot dinner. It was an awesome birthday for my mom loved ever bit of it. It was awesome having her float with us. We had a professional photographer and an awesome shoreline lunch. In all it was an amazing day on one of the best river in the world.

In the spirit of Independence Day we decided to leave all friends and family behind and explore the wild side of the Flaming Gorge wilderness. Liz and I left Friday morning about an hour behind schedule, but that was just fine. This was more of a vacation than a rushed fishing trip. We reached the river at 11 am and right away. I started hooking up with all the little planter Bows they had planted the week before. We left the launch and started floating to the best holes that I wanted to explore this trip. I used a Cicada most of the day with a few fish that wanted to play, but the majority of them would swim right up to it and laugh, then swim away. One of the coolest experiences I have ever seen happened was on this float. Right as we were about to enter a rapid my rod that was just sitting in the back of the boat with its flies dangling 5 feet behind, started screaming as the line zinged out. I quickly looked back thinking I had a snag, but to my amazement there was a huge Rainbow fighting for its life on the other end. I grabbed the rod and horsed him into the net. It was the big fish of the trip and one I will soon not forget. (it hit my big PMX) The rest of the float was highlighted with Liz’s amazing rowing job. She was a natural. She took over the oars for the last 2 miles and let me fish. Which was so much fun considering this was the most I have ever been able to fish out of my own boat. With the weather turning overcast and a little windy I tied on the crystal and ginger buggers and had fish hitting it right away. I hooked up a few times, but the bigger browns would hit it and I was having a heck of a time trying to keep them on. I must have missed 20 or so good hits. But that was all right…It was just fun to be out with Liz and having a good time together. After the float it was about 5 pm so we got the bikes unloaded and hit a 3 mile trail that takes you to an awesome lookout point of Flaming Gorge Res. With our hearts pumping and our legs tired we decided it was time now to find a camp and hangout of the night. We found a dirt road right off the main highway drove up it about 500 yards and had our own private campground that rocked. It was tons of fun to set up the tent, blow up the mattress, gather firewood and make a killer fire to cook our dinner on. This made me think how much I enjoy and miss real camping. Its funny now a days there so many ways to camp like cabins, timeshares, condos, and hotels that people forget what it is really all about. Too bad for them they are really missing out. The menu for the night was Liz’s special Chicken Tin Foil dinners with delicious smores for dessert. The only bad weather we had all trip was later that night when it decided to blow really hard for about ten minutes and give us a light summer shower. Liz woke me up while she and I quickly zipped up the windows of the tent. The next morning we were charged and ready for another great day out on the river. I was full of anticipation of rising trout and lots of hook ups. Where Liz was glad to see we had another sunny day in front of us. The float started out a lot like the first day with lot of little bows right by the launch with a few larger ones mixed in the bunch this time. Liz ended up rowing most of the day and did a great job navigating a couple large rapids, while letting me try and catch some beautiful trout. We stopped and hung out right below roller coaster rapid and like the day before were surprised with another unexpected Bow that hit right as we ready to stop. I fished the hole pretty hard, but when I switched to two ginger buggers. I had 3 hard hits and finally landed a nice male brown on my new streamer rod. (9 foot, 8 wt) The highlight to the fishing was definitely when I stopped right below mother-in-law rapid. I hooked up my first two casts and ended up catching 6 fish in about 30 minutes. It was awesome and a needed confidence boost. I noticed that the fish in the last 3 miles were a lot more active with the light hatch of PMDS coming off. I fished the hole with about a 14 foot leader, San Juan and PTs right down on the bottom. The rest of the float I tried hucking the meat again (buggers) but the smart browns would chase, but weren’t to hungry or it wasn’t really the right conditions for them. Little sunny and early in the day. Both days I hitched rides back to the dam with fellow fishermen, instead of paying $84 bucks witch I personally think is totally rapping people. In all it was an awesome experience that Liz and I will never forget. I love going on trips with her where we can both be ourselves and let our love for nature and the great outdoors roam free like the wild trout we were catching. I am so lucky to have such a cool wife that loves the outdoors as much as I do, because there it nothing better that sharing experiences together that last in your memories forever.

I was finally on the Green River during the coveted Cicada hatch. The trip started out about 3 weeks ago when my friend Brent invited me to go with him to Missula, Montana to float and fish in that area during this weekend. After talking it over with Liz there was no way I could make that trip since I just got back from California. But with run off Brent decided not to go to Montana and called me to see if I wanted to float the Green on Friday and Saturday. I couldn’t go Friday cause of work, so I gave them the boat and Liz and I met them out there Saturday morning. The drive went by fast since we had the 300. We met them at 8:30am at the dam. They seemed happy to see us. I guess fishing was pretty inconstant the day before and from their body language it looked like we had our work cut out for us for the day. On our way to stuttle the car I stopped and talked to Denny and Emmitt to get some of their knowledge and a life jacket. I’m sure glad I did. Denny told me what I wanted to hear. “Fish Cicadas” I bought a few of his favorites and we were off to the water. Now thinking about it, it was the prefect day to fish Cicadas. It had been cold 3 days before and warming since. Today was by far the hottest day so far. It was sunny and about 80 degrees most of the day. The other thing to note is that the river was running at peak flows for the year, 4,200 cfs. Which was actually very nice I though. We started off fishing deep right out from the boat rap. Dave had two on an landed one and Brent missed one. After that we worked our way to the next big eddy and Dave caught a nice Bow again with his #16 disco. I even threw out the Cicada and dropper and on the first three cast I had fish come up for the fly, but no hook ups. Dave decided to row and I got to fish for about 10 minutes which was just enough time to miss a nice brown and recast in the same spot to nail a beautiful Bow. We stopped and I got out to see if I could get that Brown to come up again and as I fish up to the hole another larger brown killed my Cicada and I was hooked up again. After that we had many fish either nose our Cicadas or come out nowhere with reckless abanddon and nail our Cicada. It was cool to see real Cicadas flying around and on the water as we fished the imitations. The next highlight was when we stopped for lunch. (I think its called Roller coaster Rapid) I got out to fish my favorite hole on the river and on my first cast a large gold shadow moved up from the depths and nailed my Cicada. It was a site to see! It was the biggest fish of the day for me about an 18-19 inch brown. I ended up finally catching a nice Bow on my dropper and them moving up river and landing two other nice Browns on the Cicada. The rest of the float was a mixed bag of hooking/missing fish on Cicadas, nymphs. The one thing I can say about this float is that it was CONSISTENT. We had fish coming to our flies all day. Even though we didn’t catch half of them we constantly had action which makes for an exciting outing. But the thing I loved about this trip most is that it was the first time I was able to share this special place with my love of my life Liz. Not the fish, not the great Cicada hatch will top the having Liz with me to share this great adventure. It’s the memories that we build and store in our minds that mean the most to us in this life.

So I the plan was set. Dane, Addie, Laura, and myself were going to wake up at 5:30am on Sat April 12th and float the Green then return home latter that night. Everything was running perfect until Dane no showed, but that was alright we were still on our way. We were making great time until we got to the Daniels Hill from Death. We were almost to the summit when the Jeep which I had running at full RPMs started clicking. My first thought was SUCK the trany has had it, but as we rounded the courner to see the Berry patch. The clicking was more like a song from hell. We grudingly turned around and tried to make our way back home. The hole triped ended with the Jeep dying right at the top of the Daniels Summit Lodge. We pushed it to the lodge with the help of some nice men. Called Jeff (Dad) and he had a Larry’s towing on the way with himself. We sat down and waited in the nice warm cabin while partaking of a nice country style breakfest. At least it was the ideal place to sit and wait while thinking about what the river would have been like and how perfect a day it would have been. I really felt bad for Addie (my little sister) she was so excited for her first chance to float down the Green. By 10 am we were back home in Vineyard, it was as if it was a new day and that all the trama was just a figment of a bad dream. With all this new found free time I could finally get some work done that I needed to. So instead of fishing for hungry trout on a pristine trout stream I was building an entertainment center for my materialistic side of life. I also fixed up my bike jump and hung out with my buddy Cash. So how do I catorgies this adventure trip?I would have to say it is somewhere in ballpark as worst ever or maybe just maybe, a blessing???

One thing that makes me feel better is that if we would have gone it wouldn’t have been very good fishing anyway because they raised the flows from 800cfs to 1600cfs and it put down all the fish. At least that what the Utah on the fly guys said.
