The water was still a little high and cold, but the fish we there and they have to eat in not so prime conditions. So we rigged up and with a short Fly Fishing and Casting lesson we were wet wading to a promising run. With in his first 20 casts Rudy was hooked up, but the acorbatic brown leaped out of the water an threw the hook. Now with the the feel of a hook up Rudy was pumped and ready. Within minutes I looked over and saw him doubled over and in a fight with a nice MP brown. This the fish hunkered down running up and down the run giving Rudy a taste of a true fly rod fight. But after a couple minutes the big fish got the best of us and shook the little hook loose. After the hole settled down we tried another promising area. Rudy once again showed that he was a quick learner and caught and landed his first fish on a fly rod. It was great to see the excitement on his face as he released the little brown. The rest of the morning we caught a couple more fish, but the bugs weren’t giving us any help and the fish were just a little lazy. But the day was a huge success as Rudy got to experience another outdoor activity and is now planning on buying a rod and reel and going after those fish that got away.

On the way home I stopped by a favorite hole on the LP. It was void of fishermen (which is rare) but full of emerger (pmd, caddis) eating fish. After a couple hrs of fishing I had landed 10+ fish and the smallest being a bow around 17 inches and the largest was a toad brown that had to be over 23 or more??? It was a great day and nice way to top of a little bit slower than normal morning.

Griffen isn’t your tipical teenager, he is an avid fly fishermen that would rather send an afternoon with his best friend Preston and Dad chasing rising fish than chasing little girls. We had a great day on the river with perfect weather. With the blue bird spring day, the BWOs weren’t popping to hard, but there were enough emergers to keep the fish up and feeding all afternoom. I think the pics tell the story.

I though what better way to honor their legacy then to go and take advantage of the land they fought so hard to protect. 7 am found me knee deep in the Lower Provo River targeting only large rainbows and browns in a popular spot named after a famous vacuum. The morning started off quick as a 21 inch brown slammed my over-sized playboy bunny on my second cast. It fought great and tried to bull dog me up river, but I wasn’t using 12 test for nothing.

On my very next cast I got a strike, but the fish seemed to fight differently than a normal trout. It wasn’t very fast and it would only try and dive. As I got it to the shore, I saw the markings of a perch and thought how in the world did a perch get that streamer in it mouth? But as got a better look, I noticed it was a feisty little Walleye. WOW! That was a surprise. Its not everyday that you get the chance for a Walleye to bite a fly on a Walleye lake let alone on the Lower Provo River. I was pretty excited for the rest of the morning. I landed a few other trout, but nothing could top the surprise of the day.

I get ask to go fishing with others almost on a daily basis, but this time it was different. Griff was turning 13 and all he wanted to do for his b-day was to go fishing with me, his dad Jeff, best friend Preston and best friends dad Todd. The plan was set for a 2 day float trip down the coveted Green River in NE Utah. This was going to be a trip of firsts for our group. It would be the first time Griff and his dad experience the Green as well, as Preston and his dads first time fly fishing. I couldn’t think of a better way to spend a b-day as well as a first time fly fishing then on the Green with your boys. I knew this trip was going to be special. The trip started out with a forecast of 1-3 inches snow, but as we got to the summit and ready to drop down to the lodge there was already 3 inches of snow and it didn’t seem to be letting up. The Green River Canyon was a surreal experience to see the high red cliff walls covered in a blanket of snow. I couldn’t help hoping that the snow would stick around a give us some amazing scenery and most importantly epic fishing. I must have done something right, because the snow never quit the whole time we were there. Being 1 of only 3 boats on the water we took our sweet time enjoying the best runs and holes. Todd started the trip off catching a nice brown on his 2nd cast ever on a fly rod. (Beginners luck to the max)

After a great start we had a nice consistent day of catching and missed hook-ups. One of the high lights of the trip was Dave’s monster bow he caught after fishing for it for over 30 mins. It was amazing to see him focus on this larger fish, until it finally fell to a #22 midge. Hooking it was only haft the battle. This fish fought hard! It tarpon leaped at least 5 times giving him a truly trophy of a fish. It was his largest trout ever and by the shaking of his hands, it won’t be one he forgets.

As we moved down river we started noticing heads poping all over the edges of the river and in slow back eddies. I’d been so excited about our large bows (Jeffs and Prestons hogs-too bad Preston) that I hadn’t even noticed the heavy midge hatch that was all around us. There were hundreds of rise forms all over the river. It was a site to see and frustrating at the same time, as the fish had so much food that it was hard to get our offering noticed. Since we only had gone 2 miles and it was already 4:45pm we packed up and speed fished the remainder 5 miles before it got dark. The speed fishing was great with over-sized streamers and deep nymphs.

As we reached little hole the wind picked up while the temps dropped. We were frozen and couldn’t wait for a nice warm meal at the lodge. If you haven’t eaten at the the Flaming Gorge Lodge you need to. It is all part of the culture of the area, plus the food is tasty and there is plenty of it. The next morning we were graced with 50 mph winds and at least 12 inches of fresh snow. I wished I was on a snowboarding trip, but it was April and it was supposed to be nice fly fishing weather, but thats spring in Utah.

At breakfast we weighed our odds, but when Plan A fails its time to go to Plan B. This was to drive right at the storm and hopefully past it by the time we reached the Middle Provo. Our plan worked and the fishing didn’t disappoint. We had semi blue sky’s with a little wind and 45 degree temps. Just perfect for another late spring midge hatch.

In all the whole trip was an adventure and hopefully one that will be embedded in the hearts of the two newbies and a father and son enjoying a special day together. But for me the odd man out, I had a trip of a life time. I had the opportunity to watch first hand as father and sons, friends and family enjoy time spent together. Because in life this is the way I imagened God meant it to be.

When the fishing is great, the great do whatever it takes to be on the water. This past week the fishing has been great. The famed Blue Wing Olive Mayfly has been hatching daily on a local trout stream, bringing some of the best top water action of the year, as well as producing a hatch of die hard fisherman. With the fishing off the charts I couldn’t sit around until Saturday to get back on the water. Fortunately I have a flexible job and was able to take a couple of half days and fish the river with some friends as well as hit it on Sat. So with 4 days on the water this week, I was able to witness first hand the majestic beauty that God has giving us to experience and respect. During these days I have learned some great lessons about fly fishing as well as life. So here they are:

Read More Below

Lesson #1. Know your water-Having consistently fished a river for over ten years, I have come to know the the river on a personal basis. I have grown to understand its flow as well as its spirit. Most people that fly fish haven’t put in the time to understand a water. They just arrive and hope to find a hatch and fish. (Cause they read a hot spot online) Those that respect the water are the ones that are rewarded with knowledge of where the hatches occur, the time to be there, and the flies to use. You can’t put a price tag on river knowledge, period.

Lesson #2. On Tuesday I had the opportunity to fish with someone that I had never fished with or met. This outing thought me a great lesson and one I hope to always keep close to my heart. His name was Jacob Dowse, he is a student of law and fly fishing. From our stream side introduction to our last cast together Jacob was constantly learning and growing. He was excited to gain new incites to fly fishing and would constantly pose questions and then try out what I would suggest. By the end of the day Jacob was on his way to becoming a great top water fishermen. So why do I tell you Jacobs story? Its because we should all strive to be more like Jacob, students of our sport and in everything that we do in life. Never stop trying to learn.

Lesson #3. Saturday was a cold morning, the freezing canyon breeze ripped through our clothing making fishing near crazy. The forecast called for 51 degrees, but by noon it was still a cold day with no sign of letting up or producing any kind of hatch. Knowing the river, I continued to tell myself as well as our large 6 man group that it will happen, just be patient. Just like it was supposed to around 2pm, the wind died and the midges and BWO’s can out in full force. At one time we had 4 hook ups at once. There were hundreds of fish eating like it was their last supper. So why do I tell you this? Its because at around 1:30pm one of our group members couldn’t take it any longer. He was mad the hatch didn’t come off on time and thought he was wasting his time and left. Not realizing if he would have just stuck it out a little longer he would have had some of the best dry fly fishing of the year. So from Jordan I learned to be patient, if the fishing isn’t great hangout and enjoy the surrounding and friends, because you never know what you might miss on the water if you go back to the city.

Lesson #4. Be prepared- Lately I have been getting a lot of fly orders. Which is a good thing, but I haven’t sat down to refill my my own fly boxes. Those that know me are probably laughing,(Cause they know of the 1000s of flies I carry around) but when I got to the river last Sat. I needed a size 16 para BWO, which I was out of. I had sizes 22, 20, 18, 14, but not one #16. I ended up using a double emerger setup that worked just fine, but it got me thinking that the next time I go out I need to be prepared, since this is important to me. So that night I stayed up tying, refilling my old BWO box as well as some bigger buffalo midges. That next time on the river, I was prepared for almost any situation and the fished seemed to like the new flies. So do as you learned in Scouts and be prepared.

Lesson #5. Fish Emergers-Plain and simple. Fish like emergers, better than adults. SO FISH EMERGERS!

Lesson #6. On Friday I though I would throw out to a couple of buddies that I would be hitting the river in the morning. It turned in to a 7 guy group. I usually don’t like to fish in large groups, (2 or 3 tops) but today it was a great time and half of the whole experience. We had great conversations as well as lots of smack talk. I guess larger groups can be awesome if the situation is right. I might have to try that again. Didn’t hurt that the fishing was epic.

Lesson #7. Do our part- As I walked the river this past week I noticed garbage, pop cans, flip flops littering the banks. Each time out I would pick up the piles I would create and pack them out in my net. I know that this problem will never end, but if we all do our part and pick up any trash we see, we can keep our rivers clean and pristine.

Here are a few more of my favorite pictures of the week. Can never have too many, right?

The only consistent part of this winters weather is that it has been inconsistent. Some days feel like spring is just around the corner and others are just plain cold and full of that white stuff that has made Utah famous. As an avid fishermen and snowboarder I am in paradise every winter. This years weather has given a nice balance of deep pow and thick midge hatches.

Read more below

This past week has been no exception. I found myself on the mtn 4 days this week and with break from the storm and a bright/warmer Saturday found me and my bro on my favorite midging water. The scenery was beyond amazing with a couple new feet of snow, the river edges looked untouched and pure. The cherry on top was the steam that rose from the water engulfing us into the river. At times it was so thick that I would loss sight of my tiny midges and hope to hear a slurp as they pasted to the side of me. (That’s actually how I caught my first fish of the day) The hatch was on the whole time we were there (9am-3pm) giving us constant action on top. At times it would shut off for a few mins, but out of nowhere it would start back up relveling 50 or more noses breaking through the film. Like most fishing tiny midges with light tippets we quick released more fish than we could count, but were able the talk a few of them to trying our net. It was great bro time and nice to be out of the inversion and on a stream getting a tan between missed fish and re-tying outfits.

Side Tip: I did learn something this trip. I learned that those that can actually see there midges floating on the surface hook up with twice as many fish as those that fish blindly to a certain area they think there flies are. Being able to see your flies is crucial! If you can’t change until you can. Also pin point casting is so important as most fish won’t move far in the winter to eat a small midge.

To make it even worst I have been spending all of my time lately chasing hogs through the ice on ice flies that I have been tying. It has been awesome, but its not the pure dry fly fishing like love. The craziness all started the night before, I stayed up way to late tying countless amounts of Midges for every situation. I made sure I had micros in the 30s, emergers in the 20s and just in case, I tied up a couple dozen nymphs. Honestly, I could have supplied a whole group, but like every fly fishermen I still felt unprepared and not having enough. The next morning, I awoke grabbed my gear and was out the door at 7:50 am. I wanted to get there early for the morning bite, as well as the hatch and after sippers. As I got about halfway around Deer Creek I stopped to check out a little creek, but as I searched for my rods, I knew they were still sleeping in my garage. SUCKKKKKK!!!!!! I yelled 10 times…I couldn’t believe I did that. I was so worried about making sure I had all my other stuff that I had forgot the most important piece of gear. So I made the 30 min drive back down the canyon, grabbed the rods, decided to get breakfast at Mcdo and take it easy. I finally got to the river at 10 am to be meet with another bombshell. As I was pulling to the side of the icy road to park, my brakes locked up on the ice and I slid half way down a little hill in 3 feet of snow and ice, I was freakin stuck! After 30 mins of pointless attempts I decided this can wait, but the fishing can’t. Luckily, an awesome fellow fishermen and his ford came to the rescue. (If you read this, thank you again) So, after all that, it was now closer to 11 and I still had a little excitement left in me. But once I got to the river bank, all that stress washed away after I seeing a trout sip a little midge. It was the only riser in the area and he was my target. I tied on a asher and foam-head emerger, walked out on a beaver dam and made my first cast. Just like it should, the 16 inch brown slurped my emerger and I was hooked up. It was a great way to start off 2010 on dries. The rest of the early afternoon found me stocking the banks for lazy sipping browns. Late afternoon I meet up with my little sis and bro-in-law. By this time the fish were starting to notice to little bugs flying around, so I took them to my go to spot. It didn’t disappoint either. We all had multiple hookups on tiny midges and Greg took home bragging rights with a couple awesome hook ups and a big healthy brown on 6x.

In all it was time well spent. The weather was comfortable, the fish were rising and I was spending time with my best friends. What more could you ask for…It was a great day

Thanksgiving to most is a time to be with family and friends. For the first time in 27 yrs I found myself wondering what I was going to do before the big feast. Normally I have plans to play football or basketball with the family, but with everyone in Cali visiting my bro, I found myself free until noon. So, I decided to hit the river and spend a little time with my third family (The LP). I am glad I did, the scenery was serine. You know those freezing winter mornings where the steam lifts off the water like hatching BWOs and fills the canyon walls. The fish were even in the giving spirit in the short time I spent on a familar run. It really was a great time to stop and reflect on what is important in life and think about those that I am thankful for. It was a great way to spend a Thanksgiving morning.
