Provo River

Back on a familar hatch

cad

So with all the craz of family parties and getting back into life, post mission. I hadn’t had a chance to take my little bro fly fishing on our favorite local river. One of our favorite times of year and hatches to fish is the summer caddis hatch. It occurs on most western streams nightly and can be some of the best fishing one might experience as a fly fishermen. I caught wind that Jordan and Gunner were hitting up the river, so right after work I rushed home grabbed my gear and meet them on the river, where I thought they would be. The hatch didn’t really give us too much excitement until the sun went down and the fish came up. For the next 2 hrs we enjoyed fish after fish hitting our dry flies with reckless abandon. It was nice to be stream side again with my little bro that I spent so much time as a kid with learning this river. The difference is now we can land a fish or two if we are lucky.

Quick-N-Easy

I haven’t done much lunch fishing over the years, but an afternoon on the river is a great stress reliever when things are sometimes not going as planned or maybe you are just jonesing to fish a local pmd hatch, either way its a great way to spend a lunch break.  Last friday I was able to sneak away from the office and spend an hour up on my favorite afternoon section of the LP. The Bikini hatch was thicker than the PMDs and Caddis, but that didn’t stop a couple hungry trout from making me look good in front of a couple hole crowders.  21Gotta love some fishermens eithics, when it comes to how close is too close, but maybe they hadn’t caught anything all day and want a few tips??? Who knows, its not for me to judge…In fact after they asked what the trick was, it was a rewarding experience to share with them a couple flies and ways to fish shallow riffles as I had to run back to the office.

Thick and Chunky

So I have been out to my favorite summer spot a couple  times in the past little bit. One thing that I have noticed is 2that there aren’t half as many people and that the bugs are thicker than I have ever scene. With that the fishing has been amazing to say the least, even I have been able to catch a few.  The one thing that I have re-learned from the last time out is that sometimes it’s a good thing to switch locations if the fishing isn’t up to par.  In this moving around I found new spots that will now be part of my game plan, instead of the same old trusty spots that I disect every time out.

Also I have noticed that this year the fish are more pron to fall to adults than my trusty emerger. I have seldom used a dropper this year which has made chasing these fish better than ever with dries. Gotta love those mean Caddis rises

In Search of Mr Green Drake

meThere our those times that you get something on you mind and its all you want to do and think about. With me it fishhappens all the time. I am a very passionate person when I get my mind wrap around a subject.  About a month ago it was Green Drakes. They were the target and I was going to do anything to find them and imiate them. It first started with tying a whole new box of them, then I had gotten a tip from a friend to there current location and with a free Saturday I was now chasing them with my friend Hoss. The hunt didn’t go as planned, We didn’t see one Green Drake all day. But it was OK because during the chase we were able to witness a great PMD hatch, Caddis hatch, and Stone Fly hatch to fill the void. Best of all I was able to use some of the big drakes that I tied and they work as if the hatch was on fire. bowI don’t know excatly what it is, but there is something special about being on a trout stream from 8am -9:30pm. You are tired, beat, hungry, and completely refresthed with the the things that you have seem and learned as the day changed. It was a great day…

The Golden Half Hour

Yep I’m Not Dead!

With life in crazy mood lately, I haven’t been able to post the past few trips and changes that have occurred.  But Hoss p2022123and I were able to sneak away to a home water last night for some of the fastest dry fly fishing for big trout. It was awesome to watch the fish change from one hatch to another over a five hour period and three different hatches.  I had never caught so many big fish in these section before. It was a testament that high water really does make a difference in bulking these fish up.  But to tell you the true it was just really nice to be out again on a familiar water again.

With the camera battery on empty, I only got a couple OK pics

In Search of a Blue Wing Olive

Late March and into April means one thing to me…Its BWO time and I better start my annual migration to “The Middle” of no where. I don’t know why I act the way I do, it just happens like a goose flying 1000s of miles ever fall and back again in the spring. There is no where I would rather be than on a familiar stretch of trout water, as an rainy overcast sky invites 100s to 1000s of little olive bugs to start and fulfill their life’s purpose. It is truly a magical time to be a fly fisherman. On this stormy cold April morning, I found myself fitting the pieces to the trout puzzle more than usual. Even though it is supposed to be the best fishing of the year it doesn’t mean you will still catch a single fish. To be successful one must be one step ahead of the prey. For example: Today was a prefect bwo day, overcast, rainy, and just a little cold, but I didn’t see a bug until 2pm. In the mean time when all 7 guys around me were using bwo dries to the rising trout. I was catching 99% of the fish in the area on tiny midges. It was fun to watch them all in amazement asking “What is the hell is he using, that is so good?” I just keep quit and landed, sipping brown after brown.
After I had fulfilled my taste for shallow sipping browns on light technical material, I switched locations in search of my days quest. As I walked the small stream I noticed the trout feeding was more war like, then I saw it, floating like a sailing ship in the Caribbean. It was my first BWO encounter of the season and I was stoked to find a pod of rising trout. After scanning a productive location I found just the spot and the fish were thick and shopping for a meal like it was their first of the year. After an hour of non-stop enjoyment, the rain and the dropping temps pushed me off the river shaking with only my light shirt on and back to my life. So if the BWO hatch is so great, why can only a handful of anglers on the river really enjoy its bounty it provides? I guess it all lye’s in the eyes of the beholder…fish or not I will always love the bwo hatch no matter what, it is part of me and my culture.
