Lower Provo (Below  Deer Creek Dam)

Rating: OK - 5  (10 Excellent – 1 Stay Home)

Water Coniditions: Flows are picking up but very fishable - Clear

Tues 6/2 :  The Provo River is in a transition zone right now. High water is just around the corner, the BWO hatch faded and the PMDs are just not out yet as well as the summer caddis. Durning this time the name of the game is sow bugs, san jaun worms as well as an assortment of other tradition nymphs. For die hard dry flyers, there is still midges in the morning and eveing that will bring trout to the top. But plan on very small flies. My favorite method during this time of  year is to get out the 6 wt and huck the meat. Streamers can be very productive during this time of year, so don’t over look walking the river in search of a big fish. Streamers that worked for me over the memorial weekend were Playboy Bunnies, Sex Dungeons, and classic black wolley buggers.

Weds 4/28:  BWOs are still hatching on stormy days, starting to see some stones as well as midges in the morning. The flows have picked up a little, but the river is still running clear. Right now is the time to get out before run off begins.

Weds 4/7:  Hit the LP for a lunch break today. No new news. The BWOs are thick and the fish are willing to play. So get out and enjoy it.

Friday 4/2: Just got a text yesterday that the fishing on the LP is epic right now with the bad weather. The group of two landed over 60 fish yesterday with a mix of nymphs and dries. The fish are keying on Midges in the morning until about 11 or 12 and them switching over to the bigger better tasting  BWO’s through the rest of the day.

*Top Blue Wing Olives(BWO): Para BWO, Hackle Stacker, Loop Wing Emerger, Bufus Emerger, Soft Hackles, Pheasant Tails

Mon 3/22: Warmer weather fishing continues to bring crowds of fishermen as well as fish out. BWOs are the ticket and fly of choice by most fish. Hatches have been starting almost daily at 1 -2pm.  There is a lot of water to fish so walk a little and get away from all the crowds.

Two friends were out  March 15th and did great focusing on BWOs from 1-3. They used gray soft hackles and PT emergers.

Fishing has been great. Midges and BWO have been the name of the game for hatch hunters. Nymphers can catch fish all day long on Pheasant Tails and Sow Bugs.  Midges have been on the water all day on warmer days, but will most likely get the fishes attention at the peak of the hatch that usually occurs at the warmest part of the day around 11-2pm.  Most migdes are a little bigger this time of year, so don’t be afraid to try a size 18-16 single midge pattern. The BWO’s have been hatching between 12-3pm. I have had the most success with a size 16-14 para BWO and a #16 gray soft hackle. The key is to move around until you find a good run with risers. Once you have done that the fish are pretty forgiving when the are keyed on eating as many BWOs as possible.  Get up there and try it out, because at this time of year the fish will be more forgiving than the last couple months.

Top Midges:  Griffin Gnat, Asher, WD-40, Astro, Bunny Midge, Zebra Midge

Top Blue Wing Olives(BWO): Para BWO, Hackle Stacker, Loop Wing Emerger, Bufus Emerger, Soft Hackles, Pheasant Tails

Others: Sow Bug, Hares Ear, and Streamers are always good producers on the LP

Middle Provo- (Below Jordanelle Dam)

Rating: Good - 6  (10 Excellent – 1 Stay Home)

Water Coniditions:  Picking up –Very Clear

Tues 6/2 :  The Provo River is in a transition zone right now. High water is just around the corner, the BWO hatch faded and the PMDs are just not out yet as well as the summer caddis. Durning this time the name of the game is sow bugs, san jaun worms as well as an assortment of other tradition nymphs. Streamers that worked for me over the memorial weekend were Playboy Bunnies, Sex Dungeons, and classic black wolley buggers.

4/28: Water is still clear and the river is fishing well. No new reports.

4/2: After getting snowned off the Green River yesterday our group decided to hit the MP in hopes of hitting a BWO hatch. We got to the river around 1pm and fished until 5pm.  The area we were fishing didn’t get the thick hatch of BWOs, but I did see a few. The fish were keyed on the larger midges (#18-20)  that blanketed the water. Fly of choice was a #20 black WD-40 fished in the film.

3/21 Fishing with Para- BWO Adult and Bead head Emerger was the ticket for fast fishing. The key was to start with a deep dropper in the morning and shorten it as the fish move up with the hatch.

BWOs are out and the focus of fish and fishermen. Don’t forget the great pre hatch emerger fishing. Hatch begins between 12-3 on most days.

Is having great midge hatches daily, but is yet to see any consistancy to with the BWO’s. From what I have heard is that some days you get it and others you don’t see a BWO. But on the other hand Midges have been hatching all day, but the heavist time being between 12-3pm and fish are very key on Midges. So don’t over look them because you want so badly to fish flies you can see.  Also if you plan on fishing near the inlet of Deer Creek watch out for Rainbow Trout Redds they have begun their spawn and will continue through spring.

Top Blue Wing Olives(BWO): Para BWO, Hackle Stacker, Loop Wing Emerger, Bufus Emerger, Soft Hackles, Pheasant Tails

Others: Sow Bug, Hares Ear, and Streamers are always good producers on the LP and  MP

Top Midges:  Griffin Gnat, Asher, WD-40, Astro, Bunny Midge, Zebra Midge

Green River- (Below Flaming Gorge Dam)

Rating: OK-4  (10 Excellent – 1 Stay Home)

Water Coniditions: Peak Flows 4300 cfs -Off Colored

6/2: The Green is runner at peak flows until June 5th where they plan to start dropping it to its summer flows at 1600 cfs. I wouldn’t waste my time until after June 5th or later. Fishing can be great right after flows drop. Cicadas were fishing great before the flows rose. Should be the ticket after June 5th.

4/28: Now is the time to go to the Green. BWO are consisant and the fish are looking up on them. Spring time fishing is in full swing on the green. I will be fishing it this weekend and will give a better update

4/2 Was able to fish the Green River on Weds 3/31. We floated the A Section. Weather was cold and it snowed all day.  BWOs never showed, but the tiny midges blanketed the water like sand.  I have never scene as many rising fish in my life. We were 1 of three boats that floated that day. It was great to have the river to ourselves. The fishing was good with cluster midge patterns like Griffith Gnats and Ashers in size 20 also have some smaller zebra midges as well as WD-40s and you will have a great day fishing for slurping trout.  Key is to find the back eddies that hold the midges and you will find the pods of fish.

Report is that the river is fishing excellent with thick midge hatches daily and some great, but unpredictable BWO hatches. If you hit it right it can be some of the best dry fly fishing of the year. The best days for the BWOs are overcast stormy days.

No new reports, but expect to see daily midge hatches, as well as great streamer fishing this time of year. The BWO’s will hatch some days, but won’t start hatching consistancy until April.

Weber River-

Rating: Average - 5  (10 Excellent – 1 Stay Home)

Water Coniditions: Run Off Has Begun-Muddy

6/2 No new news, a couple friends that fish the weber all the time say that crowds are way down and the fishing has been great with bright yellow streamers as well as other big ugly streamers.

4/28: Run off is underway, use bright flies like San Jauns worms, streamers, etc…Reports are still positive and pressure is still high.

Reports from the river say that some are finding great BWO hatches where others are fishing deep and having great success on browns and whities. Key to finding risers is to move until you find a pod.

Fishing has been great for White Fish and Browns. Most anglers I have spoke to are using small nymphs to catch both species in deeper runs. Some are targeting the daily midge hatch with small midges. Also don’t over look the great streamer fishing the Weber provides for big brown trout. I like to fish big articulated sex dungen style flies in white and ginger.

Top Blue Wing Olives(BWO): Para BWO, Hackle Stacker, Loop Wing Emerger, Bufus Emerger, Soft Hackles, Pheasant Tails

Top Midges:  Griffin Gnat, Asher, WD-40, Astro, Bunny Midge, Zebra Midge

Top Nymphs: BH Hares Ear, Pheasant Tails, Caddis Larva, Zebra Midges, Sow bugs

Stillwaters:

6/2 My picks for this weekend would be Strawberry, Current Creek or Flaming Gorge. I have heard great things about each of them. Strawberry has to top the charts with the news of a third fish over 30 inches caught this week on a fly!!!

4/28 Check out your favorite lake, because ice off is happening on a lot of them.

Utah Lake- Lost it ice last week and expect to see some good Walleye fishing shortly. If you have never caught a walleye on a fly now is the time to try. Its hard, but rewarding. My favorite flies are bright white and bright green.

Strawberry- Frozen—Start looking for ice off in April

4/2 Drove by yesterday and it was still locked up completely. Thinking end of April. On a good note Deer Creek is half frozen and Jordanelle is 90% ice free, except the west shore.
