I was so excited about getting out on the river this past Saturday that I could barley think straight. I was acting crazy, like a kid anticipating Christmas morning. But honestly, what avid fly fishermen wouldn’t be excited about amazing dry fly action in the middle of the winter?

To make it even worst I have been spending all of my time lately chasing hogs through the ice on ice flies that I have been tying. It has been awesome, but its not the pure dry fly fishing like love. The craziness all started the night before, I stayed up way to late tying countless amounts of Midges for every situation. I made sure I had micros in the 30s, emergers in the 20s and just in case, I tied up a couple dozen nymphs. Honestly, I could have supplied a whole group, but like every fly fishermen I still felt unprepared and not having enough. The next morning, I awoke grabbed my gear and was out the door at 7:50 am. I wanted to get there early for the morning bite, as well as the hatch and after sippers. As I got about halfway around Deer Creek I stopped to check out a little creek, but as I searched for my rods, I knew they were still sleeping in my garage. SUCKKKKKK!!!!!! I yelled 10 times…I couldn’t believe I did that. I was so worried about making sure I had all my other stuff that I had forgot the most important piece of gear. So I made the 30 min drive back down the canyon, grabbed the rods, decided to get breakfast at Mcdo and take it easy. I finally got to the river at 10 am to be meet with another bombshell. As I was pulling to the side of the icy road to park, my brakes locked up on the ice and I slid half way down a little hill in 3 feet of snow and ice, I was freakin stuck! After 30 mins of pointless attempts I decided this can wait, but the fishing can’t. Luckily, an awesome fellow fishermen and his ford came to the rescue. (If you read this, thank you again) So, after all that, it was now closer to 11 and I still had a little excitement left in me. But once I got to the river bank, all that stress washed away after I seeing a trout sip a little midge. It was the only riser in the area and he was my target. I tied on a asher and foam-head emerger, walked out on a beaver dam and made my first cast. Just like it should, the 16 inch brown slurped my emerger and I was hooked up. It was a great way to start off 2010 on dries. The rest of the early afternoon found me stocking the banks for lazy sipping browns. Late afternoon I meet up with my little sis and bro-in-law. By this time the fish were starting to notice to little bugs flying around, so I took them to my go to spot. It didn’t disappoint either. We all had multiple hookups on tiny midges and Greg took home bragging rights with a couple awesome hook ups and a big healthy brown on 6x.

In all it was time well spent. The weather was comfortable, the fish were rising and I was spending time with my best friends. What more could you ask for…It was a great day

So I have been out to my favorite summer spot a couple times in the past little bit. One thing that I have noticed is that there aren’t half as many people and that the bugs are thicker than I have ever scene. With that the fishing has been amazing to say the least, even I have been able to catch a few. The one thing that I have re-learned from the last time out is that sometimes it’s a good thing to switch locations if the fishing isn’t up to par. In this moving around I found new spots that will now be part of my game plan, instead of the same old trusty spots that I disect every time out.

Also I have noticed that this year the fish are more pron to fall to adults than my trusty emerger. I have seldom used a dropper this year which has made chasing these fish better than ever with dries. Gotta love those mean Caddis rises

This years trip up north was awesome as always. All the in-laws (14) got together and for our annual fishing/camping trip that we wait for each year. The fishing in the area was a little hit and miss. With the huge snow pack we had this past winter some of the rivers were high and muddy and others were clear and pristine. The key was to think out of the box and try new places. (Since there are 100s of streams in the area) For me these trips are a chance to step back and enjoy the solitude of being alone on a high country trout stream, since the in-laws fish in the morning, golf in the afternoon and fish again at dusk. But for me the fly fishermen the best time to be out is in the middle of the day, plus I don’t really golf when I’m in some of the best native cutthroat land. So I wake up late tie up some huge #2-4 dry flies and am off chasing hungry native Cutthroats by 10, until I’m beat from hiking through willows, usually dusk. This years trip was a little different in a couple ways. One is the fact that a couple of my other brother-in-laws that normally don’t come, came and they don’t golf either so they decided to come with me on some of my trout chasing trips. The other is that this year I had a hidden agenda, I was going after the 3 of the four native Cutthroats in WY. To start the “Cutt Slam” program that the WY DNR has put on. Basically the “Cutt Slam” is to catch the 4 native Cutthroats in WY. Take a pic, state where you caught it, and date. Then submitted the application form to the WY DNR and they will send you back a nice hand drawn certificate of completion. The key to the program is to get people aware of the native cutthroats that inhabit the state and to make them learn and study them in the process of trying to catch them. (Where to find them, what they eat, etc…) Luckily in my quest, we were staying in the perfect area to do it all in the same day. The Tri-Basin Divide is the area where three watersheds start and where you can catch three of the four native cutts. The Bonneville, Colorado, and Fine Spotted Snake River Cutthroats. I was able to spend a beautiful afternoon catching the three different species, as well as help 4 first timers catch their first fish on a fly rod. So in all it was an awesome trip with people I love, in a place that I love and doing what I love. How can you beat that for 5 straight days…Plus it was nice to have some sun this summer and no a single rain drop which was odd for this year. But best of all I am 3/4 to completing my “Cutt Slam” and in the research I was able to find a couple new streams that yeilded big cutties that have become some of my new favorites in the land of my in-laws.
